Who I am

Currently, Blueshift Design is just one person, Craig Rutherford. I am a production designer and nerd who lives in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Your invoice will show "Blueshift Design, LLC" and have our logo. The invoice full amount is due thirty days after being sent. Blueshift Design is a Limited-Liability Corporation.

Origin of the name

Nobody's ever asked, but in case you wanted to know: a blue shift is an optical phenomenon that occurs when a light source is moving at relativistic speeds toward the observer, causing an increase in the frequency of the light, and therefore a shift toward the blue end of the spectrum. It's what happens when light is moving toward you, fast.

Website access thoughts

Blueshift Design is dedicated to providing a quality service for our customers. This site supports the operating systems and tools used by the majority of visitors to my site, and I've tested it on the latest versions of the most popular mobile devices and web browsers. If you have any problems using my website, please contact me and let me know what type of device you're using, the operating system, your web browser's version number, the URL (web page address) of the page you were viewing, and details about the problem you experienced. I'll use this information to try to fix the problem.

The one exception to the above rule is outdated browsers. This website will not work correctly with very old versions of browsers, or really oddball or old devices. If you're attempting to access this website with Internet Explorer 6 through 10, this site will probably not display correctly. It will probably break spectacularly, and there's nothing I can do about it. (Actually, this isn't quite true, but I'm my own web developer - I program(ed) all versions of this website in Sublime Text and not much else - and programming forty separate versions of this site would take ages, and I have better things to do...like design the Next Big Concert!) This site will look best in a modern browswer like Chromium, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera, or Internet Explorer version eleven.

This website originally did not use any Javascript. However, on this new version of the site, I needed a way to do some technical stuff with the code for the menu. The site will still function perfectly without the script, but the transition from full menu to top-only menu will be slightly awkward. We also use webfonts, a technology supported on modern browsers that allow websites to display fonts without the end user needing to locally install them.

Technical: I host all of my own webfonts on this site, so if you're concerned about, say, Google tracking you through their (admittedly) awesome free webfonts library, rest assured, they cannot through this site. The fonts I use are stored on my server, no remote calls to anywhere. Same with JQuery. The only thing that might make remote calls is Wordpress, if you start logging in to leave comments, which is not required. People using NoScript or other script-blocking programs will probably not see these fonts unless you whitelist blueshift.design / blueshiftdesign.org, because many of these programs (Especially NoScript) block webfonts by default, for security reasons. I programmed this site under the assumption that the typefaces I chose would be the ones displayed. Disabling webfonts will not break the site, but all the sizes will be wrong, and it will make the pages look bad. All this to say: I highly recommend whitelisting this website. Everything I can do with CSS is done with CSS, and there's two tiny scripts to make some minor aspects of the site work. (There's a script that prevents the menu from 'jumping' as you scroll, and a script to hide my e-mail address from spam bots) So if you're concerned about malicious scripts - and in general, you should be - this is not a website you need to worry about. I just want it to display correctly for you.

If you're on one of the fancy new "high DPI" devices, like an Apple product with a Retina display, I have some CSS that will serve up fancy high-DPI graphics to you. You're welcome.

Privacy

Most of this website does not use cookies or referrer headers in any way. The one exception is the blog, which runs Wordpress and will set a cookie. This cookie is only for logging into or commenting on the Wordpress portion of the site. Disabling cookies will break the logging-in parts of Wordpress, but not the rest of the site. The only information that is recorded is your IP address, which may reveal information about your location, and browser information so that I know what operating system / browser / devices people are using to access this site. Every website on the planet does this. In our case, this is done only for testing purposes - some of the CSS and HTML I use on this site may not work across all devices, so it's important that I know if something is going to break spectacularly. I have no desire or means (or time, for that matter) to uniquely identify a visitor outside of their IP address. You are welcome to browse the site using TOR or a proxy site if that bothers you.

All mobile-aware content is done using media detection CSS, so no cookies needed for that. I may use cookies at some point in the future, but at present, you can disable them on my website if you wish without breaking it.

I will never share any of the information that is generated as a consequence of your visit (or your working with me) with third parties for any spammy or underhanded reason - except media ventures such as putting pictures and descriptions of your awesome-looking gig on my website or business brochures.
